A team from UTA Libraries is leading a pilot study comprised of six library makerspaces from across the country to investigate the effectiveness of early-stage maker-based competencies in undergraduate learning, stemming from work developed by a UTA Libraries task force. The Maker Competencies and the Undergraduate Curriculum project is funded by a $49,800 National Leadership Grant from The Institute of Museum and Library Services.

I am happy to announce that we have successfully chosen our partners for the IMLS grant-funded Maker Competencies and the Undergraduate Curriculum pilot study. It was a lengthy process, and a hard choice given the amazing selection of academic library makerspaces that we had to consider, each of which had some unique quality that made them stand out from the others.

Lucky for us, we had enough left over from our travel funds to invite a fifth partner, making six total universities that will be participating in this exciting pilot program in the spring semester.

We’ve been very busy with the usual beginning-of-the-semester rush, in addition to planning our grant work. I’m taking a quick moment over the Labor Day weekend to post an update about the partnership selection process.

We’ve narrowed our list of potential partners to five, and will make our first site visit on Monday, Sept. 11. We hope to conclude site visits in early October. From those five site visits, we will select three partners, and expect to announce our partners by the end of October here on the Thinking Outside the Stacks blog and other UTA news outlets.

My team has been awarded a $50k IMLS grant to expand and test our maker literacies program at other universities! Over the summer we will be identifying our program partners. We'll specifically be looking for other academic library makerspaces with strong faculty relations in order to pilot this exciting program in their undergraduate courses. UN-Reno is already a partner (Tara Radniecki at UNR helped with the grant proposal), and we'll be seeking three more for a total of five Universities.

Back in September, UTA Libraries submitted a preliminary two-page proposal for an IMLS National Leadership Grants for Libraries planning grant to pilot test our maker-based competencies in the undergraduate curriculum. I’m very excited to announce that in early December, we received an invitation from IMLS to submit our full 10-page proposal!

The invitation (while certainly welcomed with open arms!) could not have come at a more difficult time. The submission deadline was January 13, giving us only about a month to draft and finalize the proposal. I was getting ready to go out on...
