In Fall 2016, the Libraries began a series of pop-up experiential learning events during which attendees would engage in design thinking and creating projects. The focus of the series were relevant, low risk activities that would introduce students to ideation, testing, and a fail fast philosophy, couched in a fun topic that was relevant to their lives and interests. Events included cooking with residence hall approved appliances, mask and costume making, vinyl cutting room décor, and simple lifehacks that could improve their lives.

The process for planning and executing these events are based on a collaboration among a cross section of Libraries' department (Experiential Learning & Undergraduate Research, the FabLab, Marketing & Communications, and User Engagement & Services) as well as subject faculty from multiple disciplines. We also brought in community members with expertise that would benefit our students including Tandy Leather, Reynolds Advanced Materials, and The Geeky Seamstress

Planning is about to begin for the 2017/2018 academic year and we hope to bring back some old favorites like our Pitch of the Week (POW!) series, and introduce some new programming. Each event theme spans a month and includes 4 workshops or activities that take place weekly on Wednesdays at noon. Potentially on this year's agenda are:

Oktoberfest

  • Cheese and sausage making
  • Beer making
  • Pretzel making
  • Ceramic work to make steins
  • Leatherwork

Digital Identity

  • Curating your digital identity
  • Becoming a blogger
  • Privacy and the web
  • Portfolio-a-thon

If there is anything about which you are dying for a workshop, please send your ideas to Gretchen Trkay or comment below.
