Title: Telephone Union Officials
Description: Texas telephone operators may strike in sympathy. What workers term "low wage scales" may cause Texas union telephone operators to strike in sympathy with Western Electric employees if the latter establish picket lines in the southwest. This belief was expressed Friday by Mrs. Cora Miller of Amarillo, traffic group chairman of the Southwestern Telephone Workers Union, after the group's one day meeting in Hotel Texas. Top weekly wage for operators in the southwest is $32, and this pay scale usually is reached only after 10 years service, Mrs. Miller said. Approximately 7,500 Texas union operators would participate in such action. Of this number 2,500 are in the Northwest Texas division, an area bounded by Dalhart, Marfa and Fort Worth. Shown are telephone union officials attending a union meeting in Fort Worth. Shown left to right, Mrs. Verna Lee Hood and Mrs. Cora Miller and Mrs. Bessie Shelton. Mrs. Hood, of Childress, Texas is secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Miller, of Amarillo, Texas, was re-elected president. Mrs. Shelton of Abilene, Texas was re-elected vice chairman. They are posed in front of an American flag. Published in The Fort Worth Star-Telegram Morning Edition January 05, 1946.
