Digital Media Studio Frequently Asked Questions Q: I'm not very familiar with computers. Can I just come in and get some help? That depends. The DMS coordinator on duty can only provide limited assistance due to other students needing help. If you feel you will need one-on-one assistance with a multimedia project, you will need to set up an appointment. Q: How do I set up an appointment?Submit a request and be sure to include your contact information, at least a couple of available times, and what your project is about or what software you would like assistance with. A DMS coordinator will respond to confirm the appointment. Q: Can I email my file and let you print it out for me?No, the DMS is a self-service facility. Q: Can I send print jobs from other computer labs on campus to the DMS?No, print jobs must be sent from within the DMS. Q: Do you sell CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, or transparencies? No, but these items can be purchased at the Xerox Copy Center in the basement of Central Library across from the DMS. Q: Can you print transparencies?Yes, but the transparencies must be for laser printers only. Proof must be submitted at the time of printing to show that the transparency can be used for laser printing. Transparencies sold at the Xerox Copy Center can be used in the DMS printer. Q: What is a PC and what is a Mac?A PC is typically referring to a Windows based computer. Most multimedia projects can be completed in the DMS. Some of the project examples include:
Some of the software that is available:
*DMS users are expected to follow copyright laws while using the facility. Q: What software can I use to create a poster?Posters can be printed from most software programs that allow printing. Photoshop, Acrobat, and PowerPoint, are the most commonly used. To get the most customizable poster we recommend using Adobe Photoshop. Q: I want to print a poster or create a website to advertise my business. Is that okay? No, the license agreement for the software in the DMS is limited to educational use only. Knowingly using this software for commercial or business purposes is illegal. Q: Can you laminate? No, currently we do not have the ability to laminate. Q: I have a wallet sized photo that I want to make a poster, can you do that?It can be done, but increasing a small image into a large image can cause a loss in quality. While in the classroom, a DMC coordinator can give you an idea of how your image would look before printing. **See Example
