Biographical Sketch

Ben King "Doc" Green, (1912-1974), horse trader and rustic raconteur, was born in Hopkins County, Texas, near Cumby where his parents, David Hugh and Bird King Green, had lived several generations. At twelve years of age, Ben left home "ahorseback" and sought out wagon yards, mule barns and livery stables, a more useful education in his mind. Within a few years, Green and his family moved to Weatherford, Texas, where he attended high school, but his days as a "wild, young cowboy" buying, selling and trading stock fueled his imagination more than formal learning.

In 1960, Green contributed several of his horse trading stories to the Tally Book, publication for the Fort Worth International Quarter Horse Jockey Club, and he determined that writing about his experiences would be his goal. Green "talked his books," as he said, telling his stories into a tape recorder and to his secretary who edited his work. "Doc," the cowboy and horse trader, wrote exactly liked he talked, a dialect writing, and his spell-binding tales which had fascinated acquaintances and strangers alike launched the writer, Ben K. Green.

While attending a meeting of the Western History Association held in El Paso, Texas, Green met a New York editor who had seen his recent story, "Gray Mules," published in the Southwest Review (Dallas: Southern Methodist University Press, Summer, 1965). From that association came Horse Tradin' (1967) the first of four books by Ben K. Green published by Alfred A. Knopf. The twenty-fifth printing in 1990 of Horse Tradin' by Knopf hailed this edition of Green's stories as a classic of Western Americana.

As the popularity of his stories spread nationwide, Ben thoroughly enjoyed his fan mail and the lecture circuit. Old yarn-spinner Ben K. Green, a colorful man in character and language, published eleven books from 1963 to 1974. His contemporary, writer A. C. Greene, praised Ben's stories, saying, "I think he represented the last real voice of old-time Texas in literature."1

Scope and Contents

The personal papers of Ben King Green include twenty-three boxes of biographical and family history, correspondence, financial and legal documents, literary productions, and photographs, 1900 through 1976. Printed materials include awards, invitations, programs, and a significant number of newspaper clippings, 1943 through 1974. Also included are personal artifacts produced or acquired by Green, 1940 through 1974. This collection is divided into seven series: biographical materials, correspondence, financial and legal documents, literary productions, printed materials, oversize materials, and artifacts.

Biographical materials include an autobiographical sketch by the author and a King family history by J. H. King written, January 23, 1906. There are tributes from journals and individuals including fellow Texans, Elmer Kelton, A. C. Green, and Frank X. Tolbert. Correspondence is arranged chronologically and includes business and personal matters. Correspondents include family members, editors, publishers, literary agents, Western artists, and readers of his works.

Ben K. Green papers also include a few legal and financial documents between 1943 and 1973, such as tax receipts, certificates of stock registration, and simple business transactions.

Literary productions with inclusive dates, 1960-1974, are arranged alphabetically by book title. Short stories included in the volumes are listed individually under each book title where the story is found; however, there are several transcripts of unidentified stories. Of special interest are manuscript revisions, galley proofs, and working drafts from publishers, where Ben K. Green's hand-written comments are noted. There are galley proofs from publishers of some titles, but no notebooks or working drafts with ideas for stories written by Green himself. Literary reviews of most of Green's works follow these manuscripts. Newspaper clippings photographed on acid-free, buffered paper are a significant addition to Green's publications.

There is an interesting collection of photographs from about 1900 through the 1970's and include friends and family of East Texas near the Green family home in Cumby, Texas. West Texas communities where Green lived, Weatherford, San Angelo, and Fort Worth are well represented here.

Personal artifacts and oversized printed materials including awards and illustrations are were placed in oversize locations which are described at the end of the container list. Included there is a unique illustration designed by Ben K. Green in the early 1960's entitled "International Quarter Horse Jockey Club Inspection Chart for Registration."
