Special Collections
SUMMARY:
Function - The Archivist for University, Labor and Political Collections is responsible for applying an advanced level of professional skills to all aspects of archival administration in the areas of Texas labor history, Texas political history and The University of Texas at Arlington Archives. The Archivist works on the Special Collections service desk.
DUTIES:
- works as assigned on service desk providing reference assistance for all areas of Special Collections and applying the Special Collections Service Desk Performance Standards;
- answers reference questions by telephone, mail, or electronically;
- serves as University Archivist, including conducting outreach to the university community and applying the University's records retention schedule to promote the identification, acquisition and preservation in the University Archives of University records determined to have enduring value;
- accessions and appraises newly acquired archival collections;
- processes and/or supervises the processing of archival collections, including compiling finding aids and encoding them in EAD;
- participates in giving tours to visitors, bibliographic instruction to university classes, and presentations to community groups and professional associations;
- serves as liaison with the professor in the UT Arlington History Department who specializes in Texas labor and political history; works with him to acquire collections and other research material;
- coordinates the accessioning, transcription and provision of access to oral history interviews;
- participates in the Professional Forum;
- serves on program area, library, and university committees as appointed or elected;
- participates in professional associations, workshops, conferences, and meetings. Contributes to the advancement of the profession and status of the UT Arlington Library;
- prepares monthly and annual reports of activities;
- is responsible for work area safety; takes prompt action to prevent accidents or fires;
- performs other appropriate duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION:
Received - Works under the general supervision of, and within the guidelines set by, the Special Collections Program Coordinator.
Given -
May supervise a Graduate Research Assistant or a student assistant.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
ALA-accredited master’s or M.A. in history or a field related to the collections. Holders of a master's degree other than the ALA-accredited master's must have completed coursework in archival management and/or attained an archival certificate or membership in the Academy of Certified Archivists.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Coursework in archival management, archival certificate and/or membership in the Academy of Certified Archivists (preferred for holders of MLS; required for holders of other master's degrees); knowledge of current professional archival standards and practices; experience processing historical or archival collections; familiarity with Encoded Archival Description and Describing Archives: A Content Standard; training and background in history; familiarity with Texas labor history, Texas political history and/or The University of Texas at Arlington; knowledge of and experience with standards and best practices for records management; knowledge of emerging digital records technology and familiarity with digital preservation; good organizational and interpersonal skills; high degree of initiative; experience in a service situation; supervisory experience; and familiarity with Microsoft Office.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Participates in Special Collections' weekend and evening service desk rotation. Must be able to lift 40 lb. boxes. Must have or obtain a valid Texas driver's license and authorization to drive a university vehicle.
