Laptop Computer Borrowing Policy and Form

Eligible Borrowers

Current University of Texas at Arlington faculty, staff and students are eligible to check out a laptop. However, any block on a patron record will prevent this privilege until the block is cleared. Guest Card holders are not eligible to use this equipment.

Loan Period

The Central Library has 68 laptop computers available for checkout to eligible borrowers. These laptops can be checked out for a 24 hour period. Laptops can be taken out of the library, but it is important to note that the wireless equipment will only work on campus in areas with access to the UT Arlington wireless network.

Laptops are also available at the Architecture & Fine Arts Library and Science & Engineering Library. AFA has laptops that can be checked out for a 4 hour period, while SEL has laptops available for a 24-hour loan period.

Laptops are available on a first-come first-serve basis. Laptops are non-renewable. The Libraries will not hold laptops for users.

  • When a laptop is checked out, the individual doing so assumes full financial responsibility for the property.
  • Computers must not be left unattended at any time.
  • Any computer malfunctions should be reported to staff when the laptop is returned.
Fines and Replacement Charges

Laptops accrue overdue fines at the rate of 5 cents a minute ($0.05 per minute) with a maximum fine of $60.00. Fines will be assessed for all laptop users (including faculty). There is no grace period.

A replacement charge for damage to or the loss of a laptop and/or its peripherals will be assessed as necessary. The estimated value of the equipment is $3000. A processing fee of $35 and overdue fines may also be incurred, depending upon circumstances.

Laptop Agreement Form

The first time a borrower checks out a laptop a Laptop Agreement Form (PDF) must be completed, acknowledging responsibility for the equipment they check out. That form is kept on file with the Access Services Department in the Libraries.

Viewing the Laptop Agreement Form requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.

  • The Libraries are not responsible for any computer viruses that may be transferred to, or from, a user's diskette.
  • Only one laptop per person may be checked out at a time.
