UT Arlington Library Circulation Policies: Materials Types

The UT Arlington Library provides information resources of a variety of types and in a variety of formats. Each of these types can have different rules for borrowing them.

Books

These are regularly circulating materials. Their loan periods are determined by what category of user you are. Overdue fines are 25 cents per day to a maximum of $15, per item for all users except UT Arlington Faculty and Staff. Fines on overdue items that have been recalled by another library user are $2.00 per day, per item for all users including UT Arlington Faculty and Staff.

Materials in this category include:

  • Most books in the Libraries (Architecture & Fine Arts, Central, and Science & Engineering)
  • New books, including those displayed on New Book Shelves
  • Books in the Minority Cultures Collection (MCC)
  • Most US Government Publications
  • Most Texas State Publications
  • Computer diskettes and CD-ROMs

Not included are periodicals, laptop computers, special materials, or non-circulating material.

Periodicals

Periodicals in the UT Arlington Library can be checked out only for short periods of time and only by people with the borrowing privileges of UT Arlington Faculty and graduate students.

This category includes:

  • Most current periodicals in the Libraries (Architecture & Fine Arts, Central, and Science & Engineering) including Government Documents and Multicultural Collection (MCC) periodicals
  • Most bound periodicals in the Libraries (Architecture & Fine Arts, Central, and Science & Engineering) including Government Documents and Multicultural Collection (MCC) periodicals

Loan periods for circulating periodicals are:

  • UT Arlington Faculty:
    7 days, no renewals
  • UT Arlington graduate students:
    2 hours, no renewals

UT Arlington undergraduate students, staff, and secondary borrowers cannot check out periodicals.

Overdue fines are 1 cent per minute to a maximum of $30, per item for graduate students. UT Arlington Faculty are not charged overdue fines unless the item has been recalled. Fines on overdue items that have been recalled by another library user are $2.00 per day, per item for all users including UT Arlington Faculty.

Not included in this category of materials are:

  • Current or bound periodicals that have been placed on Reserve
  • Periodicals that the Libraries own in microfilm or microfiche, or in an electronic format
  • Periodicals in Special Collections & Archives
Laptop Computers
  • Available for current UT Arlington students, faculty, and staff only
  • 24 hours, no renewals
  • Overdue fine: 5 cents per minute to a maximum of $60.00
  • Replacement cost: processing fee and damages to the computer and/or its peripherals up to $3000.00

Special Materials

Other materials in the Libraries can circulate but with different loan periods and different overdue fines.

These materials include:

  • Reading Resources Room materials:
    7 days, one renewal
    Overdue fine: 25 cents per day per item to a maximum of $15.00
  • Music Lab materials:
    4 days, 1 renewal
    Overdue fine: $1.20 per day per item to a maximum of $30
  • Media materials:
    (videocassettes, audiocassettes, LPs, CDs, filmstrips, slides, diskettes and CD-ROMs not accompanying regularly circulating books, non-media materials accompanying media items):
    4 days, 1 renewal
    Overdue fine: $1.20 per day per item to a maximum of $30
  • VCR headphones:
    4 hours, no renewals
    Overdue fine: 2 cents per minute to a maximum of $15.00
  • Reserves materials:
    Loan periods are determined by the faculty member placing the item on reserve, for course materials; or by a librarian, for other materials.
    Loan periods can be:
    2 hours, Library Use Only
    (overdue fine: 2 cents per minute to maximum $30, per item)
    3 hours, May Leave Library
    (overdue fine: 2 cents per minute to a maximum $30, per item)
    24 hours
    (overdue fine: 2 cents per minute to a maximum $30, per item)
    3 days
    (overdue fine: $1.20 per day to a maximum $30, per item)
    7 days
    (overdue fine: $1.20 per day to a maximum $30, per item)
Non-Circulating Materials

Some materials in the UT Arlington Library cannot be checked out.

These materials include:

  • Items in the Reference collections of the Libraries (Architecture & Fine Arts, Central, and Science & Engineering)
  • Items in Special Collections & Archives
  • Microfilm
  • Microfiche
  • Maps
  • UT Arlington-produced archival music tapes
