UT Arlington Library Circulation Policies: Users

The UT Arlington Library has different categories of users, with each category having different privileges for checking out materials from the Library.

UT Arlington Undergraduate Students

"Undergraduate Students" are people currently enrolled at UT Arlington in an undergraduate program of study, as defined by the UT Arlington Registrar's Office.

Undergradutes can:

  • Have up to 50 items checked out at one time
  • Check out books for 30 days
  • Check out special materials
  • Renew materials 2 times for 30 days each time, unless an item has been placed on hold for another user

Undergraduates cannot check out current or bound periodicals.

People enrolled in an undergraduate program of study at UT Arlington but who are also in the UT Arlington Honors College or the McNair Fellows Program receive the library privileges of UT Arlington graduate students, as outlined below.

Graduate Students

"Graduate Students" are people currently enrolled at UT Arlington in a graduate program of study, as defined by the UT Arlington Registrar's Office.

Graduate students can:

  • Have up to 50 items checked out at one time
  • Check out books for one semester
  • Check out special materials
  • Check out current or bound periodicals for 2 hours, with no renewals
  • Renew materials 3 times for one semester each time, unless an item has been placed on hold for another user

Graduate students holding an appointment as a Graduate Teaching Assistant or a Graduate Research Assistant receive "Faculty" privileges at the UT Arlington Library.

Graduate students whose research or teaching assignments require that they receive the borrowing privileges of UT Arlington Faculty should apply for those privileges at the Central Library Circulation Desk. UT Arlington Faculty

"UT Arlington Faculty" are people holding a current faculty appointment at UT Arlington, as defined by the Office of Human Resources, or whose positions are categorized as "Associate of the Faculty".

Visiting or temporary faculty and researchers can also receive the privileges of UT Arlington Faculty through arrangements with the Central Library Circulation Desk. Contact us for more information.

Faculty can:

  • Have an unlimited number of items checked out at one time
  • Check out books for 1 academic year, with a due date of May 31
  • Check out special materials
  • Check out current or bound periodicals for 7 days, with no renewals
  • Renew materials 2 times for 1 academic yeareach time, unless an item has been placed on hold for another user

Faculty are not charged regular overdue fines; however, faculty are charged overdue fines on materials recalled by another user. Recall fines are $2.00 per day per item. Faculty are also charged overdue fines on Interlibrary Loan materials.

If faculty fail to return materials or return materials with damage, they will be billed for the replacement of the item or for repairing the damage.

UT Arlington Staff

"UT Arlington Staff" are people holding a current appointment as full-time or part-time staff at UT Arlington, as defined by the Office of Human Resources.

Staff can:

  • Have up to 50 items checked out at one time
  • Check out books for 30 days
  • Check out special materials
  • Renew materials 2 times for 30 days each time, unless an item has been placed on hold for another user
K-12 Students and Teachers

Participants in the K12 Connections program are area high school students and local teachers and librarians for grades K-12.

K12 Connections participants can:

  • Have up to 5 items checked out at one time
  • Check out books for 21 days
  • Check out special materials
  • Renew materials 2 times for 21 days each time, unless an item has been placed on hold for another user
Guest Borrowers

"Guest Borrowers" are people who are not part of any of the above categories but who have privileges at the UT Arlington Libraries through special arrangements.

Guest Borrowers can:

  • Have up to 5 items checked out at one time
  • Check out books for 21 days
  • Check out special materials
  • Renew materials 2 times for 21 days each time, unless an item has been placed on hold for another user
  • Renew materials by telephone, fax, email or at any of the Library’s Circulation Service Desks.

Guest Borrowers cannot:

  • check out current or bound periodicals
  • use the UT Arlington Library's Interlibrary Loan Services
  • use some of the Library's online databases

Contact the Reference Desk in person, by e-mail (library-ref@uta.edu), or by phone (817-272-3394) to find out which databases are available to secondary borrowers.

Authorized (Proxy) Borrowers:

Patrons with MavExpress Cards may authorize others to check out library materials for them. If you authorize others to check out materials for you, we will link your account to the MavExpress card of this proxy borrower. You are responsible for all materials, any overdue fines, damage, or replacement costs for all materials checked out on your account by a proxy borrower.

Proxy borrowers have the borrowing privileges of the patron they are a proxy borrower for with regard to loan periods and types of items that may be checked out.

Arrange to set up a proxy borrower at the Central Library Circulation Desk or contact us for more information. Your authorized Proxy Borrower will present their own MavExpress Card when checking out materials for you.

Other Borrowers:

  • Youth Borrowers
    Borrowers under the age of 18 must have on file a completed Youth Access Policy and Consent Form. More information on the Youth Access Policy is available.   • Guest Borrowers
    Guest Borrowers pay $40 per year for a library card allowing them to check out materials for personal use. It is not necessary to live in Arlington to be a "Guest Borrower".
  • Corporate Borrowers
    Corporate Borrowers pay $75 per year (for 1 library card) or $300 per year (for a set of 5 cards) allowing them to check out materials for the use of their corporation or business. The corporation or business does not have to be located in Arlington for it to be a "Corporate Borrower".

Abuse of Library Privileges

The UT Arlington Library may suspend the library privileges and block the account of any borrower for the following reasons:

  • Failing to adhere to Library policies, including following the Library's Code of Conduct;
  • Stealing or defacing library materials;
  • Failing to pay library fines.

Failure to return library materials and pay overdue fees may result in further collection procedures by the UT Arlington Business Office.
