Guidelines for the Use of Special Collections Materials
  • All readers must present photo identification and be registered at the service desk.
  • Any personal property (coats, hats, purses, bags, briefcases, etc.) not essential to research, including headphones and other library or personal books and materials, must be deposited at the service desk in the lockers provided. Laptop computers are allowed.
  • All materials housed in Special Collections are non-circulating.
  • The number of items issued to a researcher will not exceed one manuscript box and/or three bound or printed items. Identification strips must remain with the materials.
  • Notes should only be taken in pencil. Pens or any other non-soluble markers are not to be brought into the research areas.
  • All materials must be handled with care. Readers who are careless in handling materials may be denied further access. See Guidelines for Handling Archives & Manuscripts
  • Unopened leaves of books will be cut by a staff member; ask for assistance at service desk.
  • Fragile books are to be used with the book cradles available on the reading tables.
  • Food, drink, tobacco, gum, or candy is not to be consumed in the Special Collections research areas.
  • Requests for photocopies will be filled as time allows and according to Special Collections' photocopy policy. Copy requests may be denied due to fragile condition, large size, or copyright restrictions.
  • Researchers are held responsible for all materials issued to them. Do not transfer materials to another researcher.
  • Materials must be returned to the service desk when leaving for the day or for more than a few minutes. You are responsible for the security of the materials checked out to you.
  • Upon leaving the Special Collections area, researchers may be asked to present personal belongings for inspection.

Observance of the above guidelines will help to insure the availability of the materials in Special Collections for future research.

Thank you for your cooperation!
