OneBook: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.
UT Arlington Conversations is a program designed to engage
students, faculty, and staff in a campus-wide, year-long
discussion of a theme related to a significant issue. The
cornerstone of this program will be a common reading
experience, called OneBook, shared by all freshmen in their
ENGL 1301: Freshman Composition and EDUC 1131: Freshman
Seminar courses. Find a display with more information and
handouts on the first floor of Central Library.
The book chosen by the OneBook committee for this year’s
common reading experience is The Kite Runner by Khaled
Hosseini. This debut novel tells the story of Amir, a
privileged young boy living in Afghanistan in the 1960s
during the last days of the monarchy, just before the
Russian invasion. . . .While we will focus on the issues of
power, the novel addresses such themes as intolerance,
violence, cultural conflicts, betrayal and redemption,
honor and dishonor, guilt and forgiveness, identity, loss,
and father-son relationships. Events are being planned as
this newsletter goes to press.

Sister City Exhibits:
Celebrate Arlington, Texas, and
Bad Königshofen in Bavaria, Germany
Sept. 14 - 20 Two exhibits will
be set up on campus in recognition of this 55-year-long
relationship, one on the first floor in Central
Library and one in the Language Acquisition Center on 3rd
Floor of Trimble Hall. From the
City of Arlington Sister Cities page:
"It was in the summer of 1951 that Mr. Kurt Zühlke, city
manager of the German town then called Königshofen (later
Bad
Königshofen), visited Arlington, Texas, at the end of a
3-month, 26-state study tour of the United States. Mr.
Zühlke was in the U.S. as
a participant in an adult education exchange program, but
because he was a city official he was also given
opportunities to learn about
American municipal government." This statement begins the
story of how the small town of Arlington, Texas, adopted an
equally small
Bavarian town in 1951, forging links that have remained
strong over the decades. The complete story is told in the
City of Arlington
Sister City
pages. In addition to necessities of life, gifts
of art have passed between the cities.
According to
Martha Liehsel, who with her husband Gerhard Liehsel are Arlington Sister City representatives working to
install the exhibits, "Two artists from UT Arlington, Benito
Huerta and Nicholas Wood, took part in the creation of the two
collaborative art works, one of which is in Arlington and
one in Bad Köenigshofen. They, along with Arlington artist
Celia Munoz, worked with Bad Köenigshofen artists on the two
projects. Pictures and background information on those art
works will be included in the exhibits."

a small display to highlight interesting and sometimes
unusual databases. These can be found on the second floor of
the Central Library. The August displays are:
North American Immigrant Letters, Diaries and Oral Histories
http://continuum.uta.edu:2048/login?url=http://www.alexanderstreet2.com/imldlive
includes 2,162 authors and approximately 100,000 pages of
information, providing a unique and personal view of what it
meant to immigrate to America and Canada between 1800 and
1950. Composed of contemporaneous letters and diaries, oral
histories, interviews, and other personal narratives, the
series provides a rich source for scholars in a wide range
of disciplines. In selected cases, users will be able to
hear the actual audio voices of the immigrants.
The New York Public Library (NYPL) Picture Collection Online
http://digital.nypl.org/mmpco/
is an image resource site for those who seek knowledge and
inspiration from visual materials. It is a collection of 30,000 digitized images
from books, magazines and newspapers as well as original
