Q: What is E-Reserves?

Readings and other course materials have been selected by your instructor to supplement the lectures and textbook for your class. Some of these materials are on Reserve in paper form at the Circulation Desks of the Architecture & Fine Arts Library, Central Library, or the Science & Engineering Library. Other materials are available on the web as E-Reserves materials. Some course readings are available both in print at a library and also on the web.

Q: How do I find readings for my classes?

You can find all of the reserve readings for your classes in the UT Arlington Library Catalog.

  1. Go to the UT Arlington Library Catalog on the web.
You can use a computer in the library or in a computer lab on campus, but you can also use your computer at home or any computer wherever you are as long as it's connected to the internet. Click here for help with connecting to the UT Arlington Library web site and catalog from off campus.
  2. Scroll down to click on the "Course Reserves" button.
  3. Search for your course using "Instructor", "Course Number", or "Department" options.
Select your instructor's name, your course number, or the department your course is offered in from the drop-down lists
You can also combine any or all of these options to find only the specific course you're taking from a specific instructor.
When you've made your selections, click "Search"
  4. Next, you'll see a list of the available reserve readings for your instructor, course, or department.
Entries that start with "ELECTRONIC RESERVES" are available on the web. The other entries on the list are reserve readings available at one of the campus libraries.
  5. Click the title of the "Electronic Reserves" reading you want to see.
  6. Then, click the "Web link" to reach the reserve reading on the web.
Q: The material that my instructor assigned isn't in the list. What do I do?

There are several possibilities ... check the following:

  • If the reading is there, but there isn't an "Electronic Reserves" listing, check with your instructor to see if she/he asked us to put it on E-Reserves.
  • E-Reserves materials are listed by the title of the article or book chapter. We've also included other information such as the author of the article and the book or journal that the article comes from. Try checking your assignment or course syllabus to see if your instructor has named the reading in a different way.
  • It takes us 5 to 7 weekdays to prepare readings for E-Reserves after your instructor brings us the material. Check back a little later, check with your instructor, or contact us.
Q: It says "Course password required". Where do I get the course password?

Get your course password from your instructor. Each course has a different password.

Q: I click the "Web link" but nothing happens.

You'll need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. See below for more information.

Q: I enter my course password, but it says "Incorrect Password".

Each course has a different password. Your course password has both letters and numbers in it. The letters have to be in CAPITAL LETTERS (upper case). If some of the numbers are "1" (one) or "0" (zero), be sure to use the numbers and not the letters "L" or "O". Also, there are no spaces in your password. If you're not sure what your course password is, ask your instructor.

Q: Why do I need Adobe Acrobat Reader?

Adobe Acrobat Reader is software that your web browser uses to let you see the E-Reserves articles, which are in PDF format.

PDF format lets us give you the articles exactly as they were published, so that you can read them from your screen, save them to your computer, or print them out to read later.

Q: Tell me more about downloading and installing Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is free software that you can download and install yourself.

First, try to get an E-Reserves article for your course. If you already have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you'll be able to see the article, and you won't have to do anything else.

If you can't see the E-Reserves article, download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader. To do this:

  1. Go to the Adobe web site, and follow the instructions on the screen.
  2. A box will pop up. Click "Save to disk" and write down the folder or directory where you choose to save the file
  3. The file you download will be about 5 or 6 MB in size, so depending on your internet connection speed, it may take several minutes to complete the downloading.
  4. When the file has finished downloading, locate the file you saved in Step 2 and double-click it to install Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  5. You can find more help with downloading and installing Adobe Acrobat Reader at Adobe Download Support

After installing Adobe Acrobat Reader, if you still can't see the E-Reserves articles, you may need to adjust your browser settings. See Adobe Acrobat Reader Support for more details.

Q: Explain to me about access restrictions for E-Reserves.

Access to E-reserves materials is restricted to people enrolled in the particular class for which the material is on reserve in order to comply with copyright policies and copyright laws.

As a result:

  • Your instructor will give you a password for the E-reserves materials for your class
  • When you click the link in the UT Arlington Library Catalog to the E-reserves item, you'll be prompted to enter this password
  • After you have entered the correct password, you'll be able to see that particular E-reserves item

Please do not share the password for your courses with people who are not currently enrolled in the course. Giving unauthorized users access to passwords is a violation of copyright policies that may contribute to infringing copyright laws, and thus may result in disciplinary or legal action.
