Print Collections

Special Collections collects in several specific subject areas. Materials are non-circulating and must be used on site in UT Arlington Central Library. The Special Collections book and journal holdings, historical manuscripts, and archives, including the university, political and labor collections, graphics, and a number of the Spanish language collections, are cataloged in the UT Arlington Library Catalog. Other materials, such as maps, and photographs are accessible with in-house Finding Aids and card catalogs.

Texas History
Books, broadsides, newspapers, sheet music, graphics, periodicals, maps, and microforms document Texas history from the beginning of European exploration to the present. Major fields of concentration include Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo colonization, the Republic of Texas period, local community histories, economic history, biographies, politics, and literature. The area surrounding the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is the primary geographic focus, but Special Collections also collects materials relating to all parts of Texas. The collections are housed in the Jenkins Garrett Library.

The U.S. War with Mexico (1846-1848)
One of the world's most comprehensive collections of books, maps, broadsides, newspapers, sheet music, graphics, and microforms on this subject in the nation. The collection documents both the United States and Mexican points of view.

Mexican History
Books, newspapers, and microfilm cover Mexican political, economic, and military history from 1810 to 1920.

Cartographic History
Books and periodicals, as well as maps with an emphasis on exploration, especially of the American Southwest and the Gulf of Mexico, represent five centuries of mapping the western hemisphere. There are also collections of school geography textbooks primarily from the 19th century as well as American atlases from the late 18th to the 20th century. Most materials are housed in the Virginia Garrett Cartographic History Library.
