Description - Responding to Slidell’s efforts to present his credentials to the Paredes government, the new minister of Foreign Affairs, Castillo y Lanzas, replied that the U.S. diplomat could not be recognized as minister plenipotentiary. To do so would signal Mexico’s acquiescence in the annexation of Texas by the United States, which the Paredes government still regarded as part of the Mexican republic.
