Description -   Electus Backus, a career military officer who fought at Monterrey with the 1st Infantry, wrote this overview of the battle for Henry B. Dawson. His account appeared posthumously (Backus died in 1862) in The Historical Magazine, a journal Dawson published from 1866 to 1876. Backus’ account of the battle focused on its first day, September 21, 1846.
