Texas Almanac
The Almanac has gone online! "In one handy volume, the Texas Almanac brings together a comprehensive list of more than 5,800 Texas towns, cities and communities; a pronunciation guide to Texas place names; crime statistics by county; a section on science and health; an extensive chapter on Texas agriculture; and obituaries of noted Texans who died during the past two years -- and more." The Almanac has added selected information from the current edition, plus links to the latest weather information and forecasts for Texas locations, links for finding road mileage between pairs of Texas cities, and the latest information about Texas road conditions. A link for calculating sunrise/set and moonrise/set at any location on a particular date. Links to state agencies, boards and commissions, and universities and Links to sources for Texas history. There is also a teachers' guide tied to the TEKS and the TAAS.
Lone Star Junction
Great site for quick information on the state for school reports and quick information. Includes songs, images, scrapbooks, an archives of people, places and events of Texas, genealogical section and even books you can read online. Great links to all sorts of information on towns and cities, newspapers, historical sites, museums, government offices, sports, food and much more. Comes complete with gift store for Texas specific items.
Texas State Historical Association
This site, in conjunction with the Center for Studies in Texas History at The University of Texas at Austin, hosts a number of resources. The Southwestern Historical Quarterly is linked at the site with a table of contents for the latest issue, as is the Riding Line, the Association's newsletter. In addition, there is a list of publication by the Association along with ordering information, links to the extensive public and educational programs sponsored by the TSHA, and, of course, there is a link to the Handbook of Texas.
The Handbook of Texas
The Handbook of Texas Online is available through a link within the Texas State Historical Association, but it is such an important resource for Texas that it deserves a separate enty here. The Handbook of Texas Online is a multidisciplinary encyclopedia of Texas history, geography, and culture. It comprises more than 23,000 articles on people, places, events, historical themes, institutions, and a host of other topic categories. The scope is broad and inclusive, designed to provide readers with concise, authoritative, and accessible articles that provide factual, nonpartisan accounts on virtually every aspect of Texas history and culture.
