In an effort to reinforce Anglo-Texas volunteers engaged in the defense of San Antonio at Salado Creek, a company of fifty-three Fayette County militiamen under the command of Capt. Nicholas Mosby Dawson is intercepted by Mexican cavalry northeast of town. Thirty-six Texans are killed; fifteen are taken prisoner.
