Texas Rangers encounter Mexican insurgents led by Juan Cortina on the Rio Grande at La Bolsa Bend, 12 miles southwest of present-day Harlingen. Fighting ensues on both sides of the river as a number of rangers cross into Mexico. The rangers reportedly kill 29 Mexicans and wound 40 others, sustaining one killed and four wounded of their own.
