Executive Compensation Effectiveness: The Role of Stock Option Expensing and Stock Repurchases under FAS 123R
coauthored with Bonnie Quillin presented at annual conference of Southwest Finance Association, Albuquerque, New Mexico, in March 14-16, 2013. This paper examines the effectiveness of executive compensation subsequent to stock option expensing that was voluntary over a transitory period but got mandated by FASB 123R in the year 2005 and the impact of this expensing on stock repurchases. It can be expected that these changes alter the effectiveness of executive compensation not only due to the reduction of earnings due to expensing but also downstream adjustments of firms as they adapt to new guidelines. We investigate the effect on compensation as well as corporate payout policy through share repurchase as a consequence of this mandatory expense. There was considerable debate between the two camps for and against stock option expensing. It should be logical to expect a differential impact of FAS 123R on firms belonging to either camp. In addition, members of either camp may have come up with their own mechanism to comply with the new regulation. As per our understanding, this is the first paper looking into the effect of FAS 123R in this dual fashion.
