What is GIS?

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer systems that aid in the management and analysis of geographically referenced data.

Never heard of GIS?

No problem! How about Google Maps? Or Yahoo! Maps? Or the 3D applications Google Earth or Microsoft Virtual Earth? These are portals that allow you to see the tip of the huge iceberg that is GIS.

Here are some examples from common student projects on campus:

  • Find the most suitable location for a new retail establishment.
  • Plan logistical routing paths to move materials from one location to another.
  • Manage and plan access points to oil and natural gas deposits.
  • Track disease occurrences and other health issues.
  • Track crime and explore the possible relationships between crime and various demographic attributes.
  • Track and predict animal migratory patterns.
  • Manage and plan city infrastructure entities, such as roads, utility lines, and property boundaries.
