Title: Newman Family
Description: There was joy in the Newman home Friday morning when the family received news on Private First Class (Pfc.) James E. Newman. The soldier was one of 513 rescued by MacArthur's Rangers from a Japanese prison camp in the Philippines. Mrs. O. F. Newman is shown seated on a rocking chair and holding a framed picture of her son, Private First Class (Pfc.) Newman, and her two-year old grandson, Vernon Newberry. She is wearing a polka dot dress. Standing, left to right, are her daughters Mrs. H. U. Newberry, Mrs. Billy Fitch, Mrs. C. L. Brown, and granddaughter Jeanette Brown. Three sisters are wearing dresses. The family received a pre-dawn phone call from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram with news of their sons' rescue. The call came after the Newman family failed to find Private Newman among the rescued listed in the paper the night before. Private Newman's eight brothers and sisters were quickly called to share in the good news. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, February 2, 1945.
