Land speculators Haden and Benjamin Edwards call upon Nacogdoches residents to join them in a revolt against the Mexican government. The rebels draft a declaration of independence on December 21,1826, but few residents support the insurrection. The provincial military commander, with the support of Stephen F. Austin, promptly marches on Nacogdoches. By the time Mexican troops arrive in January, the Fredonian rebels had fled into Louisiana.
