Cowen, Warren Clay

Warren C. Cowen or “Red”, was born July 20, 1918, in Oklahoma to Edna Warren and Henry Clay Cowen. During World War II, Cowen served as staff sergeant with the 158th Regimental Combat Team. Cowen lost both of his legs in the fighting on New Britain after his unit was attacked by the Japanese. He returned to Texas where he became involved in politics. From 1947-1963 Cowen served five terms in the Texas House of Representatives. While in office, Cowen sat on a number of committees and was the vice chair of the Military and veteran's affairs committee twice. After his time in Austin, he moved to Fort Worth and served three terms as county clerk. Cowen was involved with a number of issues including the debate over paper vs. electronic voting ballots, the handling of mental cases, and real estate records. He died January 8, 1972, in Fort Worth.
